Murphy’s Backpacks believes education is the great equalizer. A quality education is the key that unlocks the door to a successful future. In many cities across the United States, far too many children, through no fault of their own, face daily barriers to the education they need. Many schools are not adequately able to provide teachers with the resources needed and many families are unable to fill the gap. At Murphy’s Backpacks we are passionately committed to righting this wrong.
Backpack Program
There is nothing like new school supplies! A new, just for you back pack filled with the paper, pencils, notebooks, binders and the many additional school supplies students need for a successful school year, but these items are expensive! Murphy’s Backpacks works with in-need students and schools to provide them with the school supplies they need to support a successful academic year. Every year since 2017 we have been providing schools with enough supplies for each of their students helping to alleviate some of the financial stress often placed on teachers and families.
Beyond The Backpack
Murphy’s Backpacks loves teachers and wants to help them dream bigger and achieve more by providing additional materials that help make them and their classrooms engaging and successful. Each classroom is as unique as the teacher and students that fill it. One year we provided reading programs, another additional art supplies and in the year of covid we provided cardboard dividers, water bottle holders, gift cards to encourage participation in virtual education and additional supplies so students do not have to share as they continue in person learning.
Beyond the Backpack - Frenchie’s Closet
School Supplies are not the only thing our students need. Since our start, Murphy’s Backpacks has been able to provide more than 250 Chicago students with winter coats, hats, gloves so that they would not have to choose between staying home from school or going into the cold unprepared.
The need for warm clothing and clean uniforms was larger than originally recognized. Murphy’s Backpacks, together with board member Cris Persico, created, “ Frenchie’s Closet” to honor Cris’s daughter, Frenchie in order to fill this need. Frenchie Persico was a fashionista with big dreams of opening her own clothing store, “New Attitude”. While cancer ultimately stole Frenchie at age ten, it was no match for her courage and compassion for others. Frenchie’s Closet continues to honor the big dreams and bigger heart Frenchie had for all children.
